The Honolulu Police Department-Community affairs section works to promote police and citizen cooperation to prevent crime and improve the channels of communication. The police department operates administrative and field operation units. It has a dispatch center that answers police, fire, and medical emergency and nonemergency calls. The Honolulu Police Department supports the Crime Stoppers program that assists in the identification of criminals. It supports neighborhood security watch, disaster preparedness and crime prevention programs. The department also hosts a citizens police academy and a ride along program. The Honolulu Police Department provides firearm permits and burglar alarm registration services, as well as conducts background checks. It is recognized by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The department is located in Honolulu.
