WALB is the National Broadcasting Company television affiliate in Albany, Ga., serving the southwestern part of the state. The station broadcasts on very high frequency channel 10 and its digital broadcast on channel 17. It is owned by Raycom Media. Prior to 1998, the station was the flagship for Gray Communication System's broadcasting group. The station began on Dec. 25, 1954, as the television arm of radio station WALB-AM, which had been in operation since 1941. Its main studios are located in Albany. In addition to news coverage in the Albany area, the WALB signal can also be seen as far south as Monticello, Fla., as far north as Pinehurst, Ga., as far west as Blakely, Ga., and as far east as Douglas, Ga.
