Established in 1937, Georgia State Patrol is a full-service law enforcement agency that is a division of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. The department enforces traffic laws and investigates traffic crashes, as well as supports various public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend law offenders, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. Georgia State Patrol maintains the Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT), which investigates fatal crashes thoroughly by specially trained investigators and properly documents evidence in accidents to be used in criminal proceedings. In addition, the division maintains a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team that specializes in bomb disposal and hostage and barricaded gunman situations.
