S&S Cafeteria was the idea of J. A. Smith, Jr., a Macon, Ga., restaurateur of renown, known for innovative operating methods and quality service. The first S&S Cafeteria opened in Columbus, Ga., in 1936. In 1949, the Smith family was among the first to establish a cooperative buying and distribution program for a chain of food service establishments. The company started State Wholesale Food as a central purchasing division. S&S Food Administrators was created in 1957, and offered food service management to hospitals, nursing homes, businesses, industries and educational accounts. S&S Cafeteria has restaurants in Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.
