Named for popular late-1700s evangelist Harry Hoosier, the first African American to record a Methodist church sermon, Hoosier was established at the site of the former Audubon Forest Church in southwest Atlanta in 1982. The church has seven major leadership teams that oversee dozens of ministries serving the congregation and the community. Five choirs, four usher boards, Boy and Girl Scouts and a range of classes for all ages are just some of Hoosier's many offerings. Hoosier is one of a growing number of churches in Atlanta and across the country with female pastors. Rev. Dr. Bernice Kirkland began leading Hoosier on June 27, 2010.
