The Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services Fire Academy provides entry-level training for fire recruits as well as continuing education coursework for certified firefighters.
The academy is staffed by 19 full-time instructors and 25 adjunct instructors. Each year, the academy provides training for 60-90 recruits. Recruits undergo 16 weeks of firefighter training followed by an additional 16 weeks of emergency medical technician training.
The academy also provides 15 different continuing education programs. In 2009, 1,500 students attended various courses, including driver's training, fire investigations and instructor training.
In addition to indoor classrooms, the fire academy also has outdoor training facilities, including a burn building, firefighter obstacle course and a driving course.
