Created by legislative action in 1959, the Georgia Seed Development Commission operates under the auspices of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. It is responsible for taking breeder seeds developed at the UGA Agricultural Experiment Stations, producing and maintaining them and selling them to the farming community for widespread production. The commission is a non-profit organization that sustains itself through seed sales and royalty percentages. It has a second location in Plains, Ga., in addition to this location in Athens.
