Founded at Syracuse University in 1874, Gamma Phi Beta exemplifies the extent of its commitment to school and community with the motto, "founded upon a rock". As a matter of fact, the word sorority as distinguished from the word fraternity was first used in reference to Gamma Phi Beta. These girls are rock pillars of UGA, participating in over 100 organizations on campus in all realms of the community: student government, honor societies, student judiciaries, pep squads, orientation and welcoming programs, charitable and civic bodies, just to name a few.
Each year Gamma Phil Beta sponsors a chili cook-off supporting the Children's Miracle Network and Clute Barrow Nelson Foundation. Also its Movie on the Lawn supports the American Cancer Society and Camp Fire, USA, the group's national philanthropy. The Gamma Phi Beta house was originally built by Charles Phinizy in the year 1905, and after being used by a handful of Greek institutions through the years, it was purchased by Gamma Phi Beta in 1983.
