Patients typically go to long-term specialty care facilities straight from intensive care units of hospitals.
In 2006, DeKalb Medical's LTAC facility became the only hospital in the United States certified by the Joint Commission for Disease Specific Care for patients diagnosed with respiratory failure and patients on a ventilator. DeKalb Medical also holds the Gold Seal of Approval for wound care; it the only hospital in Georgia with this designation.
