Coastal Heritage Society, based in Savannah, Ga., is a citizen s organization that preserves the cultural, industrial, military and archaeological heritage of Georgia and its coastal regions. Established in 1975, the nonprofit organization manages three historical sites and promotes awareness of various other heritage sites. Its Savannah History Museum showcases the city s history from its founding in 1733 to the present day, and includes exhibits from the battle of Savannah, and rare canoes from the 1800s. Roundhouse Railroad Museum depicts the story of industry and how it shaped Savannah and Georgia, and attracts more than than 40,000 visitors each year. The society's Fort Jackson is a national historic landmark and served as headquarters for the Confederate Savannah River defenses during the American Civil War. Coastal Heritage Society also conducts programs that entertain as well as educate, including Blues, barbecues and the annual Scottish Games.
