History of Kente Cloth Ghanaian history has it that about 2000 years ago, two hunters discovered the legendary African pider weaving a magnificent yellow & black web. Fascinated by the intricate weaving, the hunters spent weeks observing & learning the art of weaving. Proficient enough, they beat the bark of a "Kyenkyen" tree into fiber. These fibers gave birth to the first Kente Cloth. Kente Cloth originated with the Ashanti people of Ghana West Africa around the 12th century. Today Kente cloth has become an emblem of ethnicity for many African Americans, although kente cloth is worn by people of many cultures.
