Established in 1925, the University of Miami is a private, research and education center. The university serves more than 14,000 students in South Florida. It conducts investigations in the fields of marine science, engineering, education and psychology. The University of Miami governs more than 10 schools and colleges that offer undergraduate and graduate programs. It maintains various libraries that have a combined collection of over 3 million volumes and electronic and print serials. The university also provides a range of sports programs, such as football, volleyball, basketball and baseball. It operates several academic honor societies, including Phi Beta Kappa.
