Founded in 1960 by Carl Turner, Turner's Donut sets itself apart from other donut shops in that it has a spudnut, which is a raised donut made with potato flour instead of cake. Shop co-owner Yee Chau figured she sells 1,500-2,000 donuts per day. She and husband Thang met in Hong Kong. Thang fled Cambodia during the Vietnam War. The two were married in 1997 and moved to Manatee County in 1988. They began operating the shop in 2003.
