The Town of Greenwood, Florida, established in 1824 and incorporated in 1927, is a historic town surrounded by large plantations and home to several pre-Civil War houses, including the Hayes House, the Erwin House, Great Oaks, and the Hayes-Long Mansion. With a rich history, Greenwood once had doctors, cotton gins, a peanut mill, a railroad, general stores, a drug store, and a livery stable, as well as a theatrical group that presented plays in the area in the 1880s.
Today, Greenwood boasts seven homes and one store eligible for the National Registry, including the Great Oaks, an impressive example of antebellum architecture, and the Willis House, a large two-story frame home. Pender's Store, still in operation, has been serving the community since 1869, while the Greenwood Town Hall, located across from the store, has been a central hub for the town since the 1960s.
