Established in 1961, The Southwest Florida Water Management District aims at protecting and preserving water resources throughout Florida. It operates and maintains several large flood protection projects, as well as protects water quality and natural systems, such as rivers, lakes, wetland and associated upland. The district members identify water-related issues in various basins and provide programs and budgets to address the same. It also implements district policies, rules, plans and programs, as well as offers legal support to all departments, local governments and other governmental agencies. Southwest Florida Water Management District s records and data department provides support to regulatory authorities, tracks permit conditions, administers licensing exams for well contractors, and maintains records of well construction permits and licensed well drillers. Additionally, the district s resource management department collects and stores water and climatic data and monitors groundwater quality. It maintains more than 90 local governments that are spread across an area of over 10,000 square miles with total population of nearly 4 million. Headquartered in Brooksville, Fla., Southwest Florida Water Management District maintains an office in Bartow, Fla.
