Palm Bay Utilities Department provides water and sewer utility services and infrastructure throughout the city of Palm Bay, Fla. PBU is responsible for the delivery of safe drinking water, wastewater treatment and infrastructure improvement. Raw water for the Palm Bay Utility Department water treatment plant is primarily derived from a shallow aquifer well field located east of Interstate 95. The shallow aquifer well field was originally developed in the immediate vicinity of the water treatment plant site. The total installed raw water pumping capacity is approximately 5,000 gallons per minute or 7.2 million gallons per day. The actual quantity of water that can be withdrawn on a safe yield basis is estimated to be approximately 6 million gallons per day on a maximum day basis. Its water distribution facilities consist of more than 540 miles of pipeline. The utilities department became city controlled in 1992, when the City of Palm Bay purchased the water and sewer utility from General Development Utilities for a cost of $32 million.
