Hernando County Mosquito Control is a department dedicated to providing treatment and control that reduce the county s population of mosquitoes. A nuisance to the residents of Hernando County, Fla., the potentially disease-carrying mosquitoes thrive in the rural, humid county. Hernando County has a total area of more than 500 square miles, 18 percent of which is water. Throughout the year, Hernando County Mosquito Control s technicians monitor and treat approximately 370 square miles within the county. The remaining areas of the county are environmentally sensitive land pockets that are restricted from chemical treatment. The department s primary goal is to locate and chemically treat mosquito breeding grounds within the county lines. Its secondary goal is to eliminate mosquitoes that have taken wing.
