Head Start is a federally funded child development program that serves children up to the age of five. The program works to increase the school readiness of young children from economically disadvantaged families, as well as children with special needs. It also serves pregnant women and their families. Head Start is one of the programs managed by Alachua County Public Schools, which is an educational district that operates elementary, middle and high schools. The district s schools offer classes in a variety of subjects, such as math, science, social studies and language arts. Its schools organize athletic activities in golf, swimming, volleyball and football.
