Broward Elementary was erected in 1926 and first opened in September 1927. It was named for former Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward.
The school is located a few blocks east of the Hillsborough River.
Broward serves a diverse, multi-ethnic student population. Eighty-nine percent of its students come from predominantly economically disadvantaged families. In addition, 20 percent of its population is classified as students with disabilities, and 18 percent are classified as English language learners.
The school's vision statement is that every student will reach his or her potential.
Broward is a part of the Teacher Incentive Fund, which provides enhanced compensation for teachers and administrators who are deemed effective at high needs schools.
The school uniform colors are red, white and blue, and the mascot is a tiger.
