Founded in 1915, the American Heart Association, also known as AHA, is a voluntary health care agency that offers coronary heart disease and stroke prevention programs. It offers informational resources on health-related issues, such as heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol control. The organization also conducts seminars and conferences on topics related to weight management, smoking and cardiovascular conditions for health care professionals. The American Heart Association organizes the What Moves U campaign, which includes school activation kits, curriculum plans and fitness programs for middle school students. It provides assistance to develop and implement health care policies, as well as enhances access to clinical services. The organization offers obesity prevention programs for children in homes, schools and restaurant settings. It also provides HeartPower!, Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart programs. The American Heart Association maintains a presence in St. Petersburg, Fla.
