ABC 7 is a television station based in Sarasota, Fla. The company first went on the air in 1971 under the call letters WXLT. It was he only station in the area where customers could receive ABC programming along with local Suncoast news, weather and sports. In addition, ABC 7 was one of the first television stations in the United States to air the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. In 1986, it was purchased by its current owners, Calkins Newspapers Inc., and Southern Broadcast Corp., and the call letters were changed to WWSB. Each year, ABC 7 provides millions of dollars in free air-time to publicize hundreds of community events, charity fund-raisers and public service announcements.
