The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is a public agency that saves lives, prevents injuries, and reduces traffic-related health care and other economic costs. It develops, promotes and implements educational, engineering and enforcement programs to end preventable tragedies and reduce safety-related economic costs associated with vehicle use and highway travel. The agency operates a vehicle safety hotline that helps in the reporting of suspected safety defects in vehicles, vehicle equipment and child safety seats. Additionally, it provides a fatality analysis reporting system that assists the traffic community in identifying traffic safety problems and evaluating the motor vehicle safety standards and highway safety initiatives.
