History
Constructed in 1895, St. Margaret's grew in the 20th century to become one of the most progressive faith communities in Washington. It voted to support the ordination of women in 1940 (long before the Episcopal Church approved women's ordinations), and became the first parish in Washington to call a woman as rector in 1987. Shortly thereafter, the gay Roman Catholic organization Dignity was offered a home at St. Margaret's when it was forbidden to meet in Catholic churches. St. Margaret's own congregation continues to be a diverse and inclusive space for the LGBTQ community and people of many cultural backgrounds.
