The American Sociological Association is a nonprofit membership association that works to promote sociology as a scientific discipline and profession to serve the public. It has more than 14,000 members, including college and university faculties, researchers, students and practitioners from various disciplines. The association operates over 40 special interest sections and hosts an annual meeting with nearly 6,000 participants. It also publishes more than 10 professional journals and magazines. Founded in 1905, the American Sociological Association provides print and online advertising services. It holds annual awards for outstanding scholars of sociology, including the Distinguished Book Award, Dissertation Award and Jessie Bernard Award. The American Sociological Association is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
