Founded in 1972, Literacy Volunteers of America provides the residents of Stamford and Greenwich with free reading, writing and English language classes, as well as job training, computer instruction and financial literacy education. The group also works with other community-based organizations, including St. Luke's Lifeworks and the First Congregational Church of Stamford, to broaden their reach. Literacy Volunteers of America serves approximately 550 students each year and benefits from over 120 volunteers. "Education matters," says executive director Diane Rosenthal. "Everyone deserves an education and that's what we do. With an education, doors open." Morning classes are held twice a week from 9:30am - noon. Evening classes are also held twice a week from 7pm - 9pm. Registriation is required for all classes.
