The Village for Families & Children, a private, nonprofit community service organization, was established in 1809 as the Hartford Female Beneficent Society and was one of the first agencies in the United States to provide homes for neglected children. The organization touches the lives of more than 7,000 children and families annually through programs and services. The programs help children who have suffered from abuse, neglect or violence, and who may be experiencing emotional, behavioral, psychological and learning problems. Programs and services include treatment, such as outpatient mental health, extended day treatment, the Eagle House, therapeutic mentoring and trauma support; placement and permanency services that include intensive family preservation/reunification, Safe Home, Sankofa House, and foster care and adoption; and family and community support, such as family resource centers, San Juan Tutorial Program and family housing alternatives.
