Stepney Volunteer Fire Department is headed by Stepney Fire Chief Mike Klemish, who oversees 30 firefighters and eight junior firefighters. The Stepney Volunteer Fire Department covers emergency calls within a 26-mile radius, providing protection for more than 20,000 residents in Stepney, Stevenson and Monroe center. It also provides coverage for Trumbull, Easton, Newtown and Shelton on a mutual aid basis. It uses four engines, a truck, a heavy rescue, a squad and a chief's vehicle. It has a dispatch center and can serve as a shelter during emergencies.
