The Stamford Water Pollution Control Authority treats and processes wastewater from the City of Stamford and the Town of Darien. Following treatment, clean water is discharged into a branch of Stamford Harbor. Stamford's wastewater has been processed at this site since the original plant opened in 1900. Since then, three new plants have been built, in 1947, 1976 and most recently in 2006. Modern updates have improved discharge water quality and increased plant capacity.
