What began as a group of Episcopalians practicing their faith in a Millville home over two centuries ago has evolved to become the St. Michael's Church it is today. The congregation, located directly next to the Naugatuck Town Green, was formed in 1786, with the current church having been built in 1875.
A prior St. Michael's church, that existed near where Salem School now is, was sold to the then-Center School District. The building went on to become the site of the Salem School before the school's current building was built in 1893.
The pastor of the church, Rev. Marston Price describes St. Michael's as a "very active" parish among its parishioners and in the town. There are youth programs, outreach ministries, programs focused on feeding the poor, Boy Scout-supported programs as well as participation in the Naugatuck Ecumenical Outreach Network (NEON).
NEON provides lunches for children during the summer months, who qualify as "free and reduced" recipients of aid throughout the school year. Over the course of the summer, 2010, there were 4,000 lunches given out to town residents of need, provided by the staff and members of St. Michael's.
There are also programs including church school and adult forum, which is religious teaching for adults, conducted in the St. Michael's Church Hall. The hall is also the location for the Naugatuck Teen Theatre program, which garners youths from throughout the region.
St. Michael's also offers free dinners at Christmas and Thanksgiving for anyone who wishes to come, and also hosts an annual fair in September.
