St. John the Evangelist Church began in a stable built in 1886. The church was organized in 1887 by the Rev. James Connolly, according to the website.
Today, about 1,000 families worship at St. John's, which can hold more than 550 people at one service. A rectory was added in 1961. A school building and convent were added at one point. The Joshua Center operates in what was once the school.
