The hub of activity that keep the town of Hamden operating is located at the Government Center at the corner of Dixwell and Evergreen avenues. Under Former Mayor Carl Amento, offices were moved to the more modern facility from Memorial Town Hall, which had grown too small to house all of the town offices. The Government Center offers ample parking, in contrast to the old Town Hall, where parking was always at a premium. The new office facility also is handicapped accessible. Three floors of offices house everything from the Tax Collector to the Planning and Zoning Department to the Town Clerk. Mayor Scott Jackson -- the state's first African-American mayor -- is the current head of town government.
