The Farmington Valley Health District is a local health department that serves the towns of Avon, Barkhamsted, Canton, Colebrook, East Granby, Farmington, Granby Hartland, New Hartford and Simsbury. The department works with schools to educate kids about proper health practices. Typical complaints include requests to inspect property for lead or mold, but the largest bulk of work is doing routine checkups on land and buildings that are being developed. Before a new building project can be approved by the town, the health district tests the soil and reviews water supply and sewage disposal proposals. If a business changes hands, the health district will inspect the building to make sure it is up to code. Health district officials also visit restaurants, reviewing the temperature controls, checking for possible cross-contamination, testing the owners knowledge on general health practices, observing if raw beef is being served and inspecting for general cleanliness. The department also has a training program for food handlers to zero in on factors that may cause food sickness. The Farmington Valley Health District also spearheaded the distribution of flu vaccinations during the H1N1 flu season.
