Established in 1980, the U.S. Department of Education is the agency of the federal government that establishes policy, as well as administers and coordinates federal assistance for education. The department supplements and complements the efforts of states and local school systems, the private sector, public and private nonprofit educational research institutions and community-based organizations to improve the quality of education. It distributes financial aid to applicants throughout the United States for elementary, secondary and college education. The U.S. Department of Education oversees research on aspects of education, collects data on trends, and gathers information to help identify approaches, ideas and teaching techniques. The Department makes recommendations for education reform. It operates an office of public affairs that supports the secretary in public information functions. It provides useful information about education and related opportunities to the media, students, parents and communities. The U.S. Department of Education additionally maintains more than five program offices, including civil rights, postsecondary education, federal student aid, and vocational and adult education. The department maintains a location in Denver.
