The Summit County Sheriff's Office, located in Breckenridge, Colo., employs a staff of more than 70 sworn officers, civilians and volunteers. It maintains a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, drug task force and canine unit. The office provides various services related to animal control and shelter, criminal investigations and detention, and emergency and records management. The Summit County Sheriff's Office supports the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is an international education program that seeks to prevent the use of illegal drugs, membership in gangs and violent behavior. In addition, it maintains a citizens advisory committee that organizes Taking Responsibility And Keeping IT (TRAK IT) and Explorer programs. Established in 1861, the Summit County Sheriff's Office also has operations and detentions divisions.
