San Luis Valley Rural Electric, like all rural electric cooperatives, is owned by the consumers it serves. Consumers automatically become members when they sign up for electrical service. As members, consumers have the right to vote and guide the cooperatives direction. Its members include business people, industry workers, teachers, ranchers, recreationists and retired people. Today, the cooperative serves more than 5,000 members. Since 1937, its business has been to provide power to the people. San Luis Valley Electric is headquartered in Monte Vista, Colo. The counties served by the cooperative are Alamosa, Rio Grande, Costilla, Conejos, Mineral, Hinsdale and Saguache.
