History
Gilpin County Arts Association's Mission: We are here to expand the appreciation and understanding for art. To provide Rocky Mountain artists with the opportunity to present, display and sell their works, and to provide financial assistance to the RE-1 Gilpin County School Art program. GCAA is a 501(c)(3) organization. Washington Hall is the location of the first jail in Central City. The jail was completed in 1862. The Washington Hall Courthouse was constructed above the jail in 1864 and has been the longest occupied, and functioning public building in the state of Colorado. It survived the big fire of 1874 that nearly burned the entire City of Central to the ground. The art gallery was established in 1947. The Gilpin County Arts Association has held a juried art show here every summer since 1948.
