Zen Heart Sangha is a non-residential community dedicated to the study and practice of Zen Buddhism for lay practitioners. Guided by Misha Shungen Merrill, a dharma heir of Suzuki Roshi, the sangha offers zazen sitting meditation, lectures, group discussions, and various Buddhist ceremonies throughout the year.
With practice places in Menlo Park and Woodside, California, as well as affiliated students in the Sacramento area and New York, Zen Heart Sangha emphasizes the meditation style of shikantaza (just sitting) passed down from Eihei Dogen, their 13th-century ancestor. The sangha fosters the development of spiritual friendship and operates on the Buddhist principle of dana (generosity), with all practice opportunities offered freely to support both current and future practitioners.
