The Wilderness Arts and Literacy Collaborative (WALC) is an academic program based in San Francisco, CA that integrates environmental education and ethnic studies to provide a unique interdisciplinary educational experience for lower-income youth of color. Through field studies and classroom learning, WALC aims to engage students in rigorous and relevant curricula that center the historical and contemporary experiences of people of color, while also fostering a deep understanding of environmental themes and sustainability.
Since its establishment in 1999, WALC has been dedicated to addressing the critical academic needs of its students and facilitating their sense of self and place in society and the ecological processes of the planet. Created by teachers of color for students of color, WALC offers an alternative educational experience that immerses students in the outdoors, allowing them to explore and restore natural environments while gaining academic knowledge and a better understanding of themselves and their communities.
