History
In 1945, two women saw a little boy sitting in a window every day, isolated from the world because of cerebral palsy. With permission from the boy's single working mother, they carried the boy and his wheelchair down a steep flight of stairs so he could explore new places and spark his intellectual and emotional development. The two volunteers were soon helping five people with disabilities. Generous people, businesses and organizations donated transportation, a vacant house to use. With borrowed chairs and tables, the growing group of volunteers provided lunch, entertainment and day activities at their first facility. That act of generosity led to the creation of the Crippled Children's Society, an organization that would become Via Services, a non-profit organization that continues to grow and serve families, children and adults with special needs and disabilities in Santa Clara County.
Specialties
Via West Campus provides residential respite care with 3, 5, 7, and 10 day programs throughout the year, amid 13 wooded acres in the Cupertino Foothills. We work with adults and children who have a vast array of developmental disorders, disabilities and conditions. Our residential respite programs provide unprecedented levels of structure and support for all of our participants. In addition to the wide array of amenities, services, and activities designed specifically for those with special needs, we provide an extremely high staffing ratio to be sure every participant gets the attention they need. Before every respite session, we assess each individual participant and decide whether a 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 staffing ratio is best for their safety and positive experience, as well as your peace of mind. Each participant is assigned to a staff member who joins him or her in activities, offering encouragement and assistance when needed.
