Established in 1950, the Maritime Administration is a part of the Department of Transportation. The agency works to meet the economic, environmental and security needs of the United States. It deals with issues related to waterborne transportation, shipping, and port and vessel operations. The Maritime Administration also manages the Maritime Security Program, which leverages commercial ships and intermodal assets to provide sealift for the U.S. Army. The agency provides support and information for current mariners, as well as educates individuals about the maritime industry. It owns and maintains a fleet of cargo ships, Ready Reserve Force. The Maritime Administration additionally operates the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
