History
Designed by California architect William H. Weeks, the building known today as The Lake Merritt - Independent Senior Living, was considered the pinnacle of urban lakeside living and luxury when it was built. The apartment hotel, with its large suites offered extraordinary comfort in elegant surroundings. The hotel's Terrace Room restaurant, with its floor-to-ceiling views, emerged as a civic gathering place and attracted big name stars and dance orchestras. In the '80s, The Lake Merritt Hotel was slated for demolition to make way for a towering high-rise condo project. The building was rescued through efforts of Oakland's preservation community and in 1987 Randall and Cheryl Berger saved the property by purchasing it. Under the Berger's management and dedication, the hotel gained acclaim as a boutique-style, business-class hotel. Now, after a nearly four million dollar transformation it shines as one of the Bay Area's most distinctive senior residences.
