History
In 1874, a logging flume was constructed in the Sugar Pine area which ran 54 miles to Madera. At its peak, the Madera Sugar Pine Company was transporting 250,000 board feet of lumber per day, and had 150 miles of railroad which was used to transport logs from the surrounding areas to the flume. In 1931, the saw mill was forced to close due to the Depression. In Jan. 1954, the American Baptist Conference Churches of the Central San Joaquin Valley realized a need for a camping ministry and purchased eighty acres of the Sugar Pine land. In 1974 Sugar Pine traded land with the government, increasing the camp size to 365 acres. Sugar Pine Christian Camps is used by nearly 10,000 campers each year. Many of these campers have life changing experiences and find their way into the family of God through the ministry that takes place at Sugar Pine.
