The Southern Marin Fire District is an independent special district established by the Marin County Board of Supervisors in 1999. It was formed by the merger of the Alto-Richardson Fire Protection District and the Tamalpais Fire Protection District. The district covers a population of approximately 27,700 and over 14,100 homes and commercial properties. It has more than 50 full-time employees, including a chief, assistant chief, a deputy chief, battalion chiefs, captains, lieutenants, firefighters and engineers. The district also maintains a staff of 10 reserve firefighters. It provides various services, such as fire suppression and prevention and paramedic and ambulance services. The district operates three stations and responds to over 4,000 incidents per year. The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is located in Mill Valley, Calif.
