About Gypsy Rack Gypsy Rack was established in 2002 as a natural and progressive outgrowth of Southern California Gold Products, Inc ( SCGP ). SCGP initially began as a small business to support the specialized divisions of the commercial automotive industry ( i.e. AM General ) with innovative design solutions for specific problems that these types of automakers encountered. The flexibility that SCGP exhibited in both research and development during these early years served well as we progressed into designing and manufacturing niche military applications for the Department of Defense. SCGP was approached by the US Marine Corp in 2002 to support Operation Iraqi Freedom by designing and building a tailgate attachment that would allow Marine Corp vehicles to carry extra fuel on-board. This design improvement named in the field as a "Gypsy Rack", extended vehicle driving ranges by twice what it had previously been. In January of 2003, SCGP delivered 2500 racks into Kuwait and all units were successfully deployed during the initial days of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Not before completion of our first project, SCGP was again contacted by the US Marine Corp to provide a much-needed solution to the issue of gunner personnel being injured as they patrolled Iraqi cities. SCGP accepted the challenge and designed an armored protection kit to shield the gunners that sit high within the vehicle. With the final design engineered in less than 24 hours, and successful prototype testing completed shortly thereafter, more than 5000 kits went into rapid production and were delivered into Baghdad ahead of schedule eight weeks later. Gypsy Rack's reputation for integrity and quality in the products we manufacture is a direct result of our continued commitment to excellence.
