History
Chartered in 2008, Self-Help Federal Credit Union is itself a relatively new institution. However, through partnership mergers, we have served California communities since 1936 and have over 130 years of service in Chicago through our partnership with historic Second Federal. The Center for Community Self-Help, which is sponsored the launch of Self-Help Federal, also has a long history serving similar communities. Self-Help is a leading community development financial institution (CDFI) that has been offering loans and financial services to underserved communities since 1980. Over this period, Self-Help has provided more than $5.95 billion of financing to over 71,000 families of modest means, small businesses and non-profit organizations across the country, and currently serves more than 80,000 members through 28 credit union branches in California, Illinois and North Carolina.
