The Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department oversees the operation of 28 regional parks encompassing nearly 45,000 acres of open land. The department bought its first 400 acres of parkland, which became Stevens Creek County Park, in 1924. The department was formed in 1956. Its headquarters are located in Los Gatos at 298 Garden Hill Drive, next to the Los Gatos Creek Trail. Vasona Lake County Park and the Los Gatos Creek Parkway are part of the department. The 150-acre park and connecting parkway are the most popular of the county's regional park and recreation areas.
