California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is responsible for protecting natural resources from fire. The department provides an array of emergency services to various counties in California through contracts with local governments. It also assists with other emergencies, such as wildlife fires, automobile accidents, swift water rescues, civil disturbances and hazardous materials spills. In addition, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection operates more than 1,000 fire engines, as well as 63 paramedic and five mobile communication centers.
