In 1971, Marlilyn Middell and Henry Use wanted to create a nonprofit organization that would instill a passion and appreciation for the performing arts in children. Now, Performing Arts for Youth Society (PAYS) features more than 28,000 elementary and middle school students participating in the program each year. While the offices of PAYS are located in Burlingame, the actual performances are conducted at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center. Programs offered include symphony, opera, theater and dance.
