History
We started because gardens play an important role in healthy ecosystems. All surplus income supports Nature in the City's mission to connect everyone in San Francisco to nature through cultivating and conserving local habitats. Nature in the City's free public programs provide community education about the importance of urban wildlife and support projects like our Nature in the City Map, Tigers on Market Street/BART Living Roof Canopies, the Green Hairstreak Corridor, Palou Phelps Open Space, Adah's Stairway, and more! Nature in the City trains young people in native gardening design and installation and opens pathways for each young professional to explore their next steps in a variety of environmental fields. These young people are the next generation of environmental stewards, and we equip them with hands-on skills and scientific knowledge that is vital to protecting biodiversity.
