History of Native Sons After nearly 30 years in the nursery trade we continue to pursue and develop new selections with the intention of adding a sense of discovery and exploration to California gardens. Our travels, both home and abroad, add appealing new species and cultivars to our collection through the generosity of friends, plant breeders and botanic gardens. We offer these plants with a shared regard for the wonder and grace of the natural world. As garden philosopher Allen Lacy has written, "I suspect that more loving and caring people can be found among gardeners than among any other group united by a common interest." Native Sons began in 1979 on one acre with the idea of producing the finest California native plants for landscape and retail nurseries. Over the years Native Sons has grown in size and scope to include plants from other Mediterranean regions of the world ( Mediterranean Europe, Southwestern Australia, South Africa and Chile ) as well as California natives. In 1985 the focus of Native Sons shifted from producing landscape material to producing a wider variety of plants in smaller container sizes for the rapidly expanding retail nursery trade. Today we service over 100 retail nurseries, several wholesalers, and landscape professionals. Native Sons plant material can be found in gardens from San Diego to Portland, Oregon.
